Aristide Maillol is known as one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century. He was trained in painting at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, then joined the Nabis. From 1900 he devoted himself to sculpting, first in wood and terracotta, later in bronze. Maillol's most beloved subject in sculpture and drawing was the female nude, which he depicted in massive, simple forms. These later became a source of inspiration for Henry Moore, among others. Dina Vierny, who was 15 when she met 73-year-old Maillol, was his muse and favourite model. After his death, she founded the Musée Maillol in Paris, which opened its doors in 1995.
