biography of Aarnout 'Arnout' van Gilst

Arnout van Gilst was a very versatile painter. His specialties were landscapes, plowing horses, seascapes and Dutch and French cityscapes. In addition, he preferred to work outside in a secluded place, where not every moment someone could show up and look over his shoulders. For example, he often nestled on a ditch side and painted the fields on the other side. Van Gilst had a very precise, almost topographical interpretation of his subject, and both his landscapes and cityscapes - including those of Dordrecht, Amsterdam and Rotterdam - can often be traced back to existing situations. Van Gilst was born in The Hague in 1898 and lived and worked in this city until 1937. Under the pseudonym A. Jonstra, his mother's maiden name, he painted sailing ships on the Frisian lakes.
