Arthur Wardle was a well-known late Victorian painter of animals, both domestic and wild. In addition, like his compatriots and contemporaries Lawrence Alma Tadema and Frederick Leighton, he was fascinated by exotic subjects. He made series of beautiful, touching animal studies in pastel.
