Ary Scheffer was born in Dordrecht in 1795 and received lessons from his father Jean Baptiste Scheffer. When his father died, he moved in 1811 with his mother and brother Henry, also a painter, to Paris. There they both received lessons from Pierre Guérin, tutor of the romantic greats Delacroix and Géricault. Ary quickly made a name for himself with his romantic history pieces, portraits of famous contemporaries, artists and members of the royal family. Performances inspired by episodes from the Bible and literature. In the 1940s he was among the most famous romantic painters in France.
