biography of Bernard te Gempt

Animal painter, especially of dogs, and student of Nicolaas Pieneman. Animal painting as a separate genre arose in the second half of the 19th century. Before, animals only played a minor role as the upholstery of other genres, such as landscapes and portraits. Dogs, cats, but also rabbits and other small animals were accurately depicted in the animal painting and they were often given human emotions and character traits. Other animal painters included Conradijn Cunaeus and Henriëtte Ronner-Knip. Te Gempt's work hangs in the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
