The painter and illustrator Bernard van Vlijmen was trained at the Rijksacademie under Nicolaas van der Waay, and lived successively in Amsterdam, Het Gooi and Italy. In Amsterdam he developed into a much sought-after painter of cityscapes and portraits of actors, actresses and politicians, which he also drew for De Groene Amsterdammer. Van Vlijmen liked to travel and regularly spent time in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and South America, where he drew and painted. In much of his work he combines an impressionistic touch with the bright and sunny light of Southern Europe.
