biography of Bernardus Arps

The painter Bernardus Arps, born and raised in Rotterdam, moved to Arnhem in 1899 and then to Oosterbeek. For that reason he is usually counted as part of the Oosterbeek School. From villa 'Bernanco' Arps painted the landscape of the Veluwezoom and several figure pieces, but he became known mainly for his meticulously executed still lifes. The subjects were flowers, whether or not combined with Roman glassware, or compositions of Eastern objects. The painter was married to the painter Anna Adriana Arps-van Rossem and was a member of Pictura Veluvensis and Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
