The German artist Carl Hilgers specialized in painting landscapes. Apart from a four-year stay in Berlin, Hilgers lived all his life in his hometown of Düsseldorf. Here he also studied at the art academy. He made numerous study trips to Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Hilgers mainly painted winter landscapes with rich fabrics, reminiscent of the ice and snowscapes of Dutch Romanticism. He had great success with these paintings at the annual exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Dresden. In particular, the accurate imagination, the fidelity and the harmonious colour were appreciated.
