biography of Charles Chaplin

Important French painter of portraits, figures and nudes. Chaplin belonged to the group of Parisian painters who idealized female beauty during the 'Belle Epoque' with an emphasis on elegance and luxury. His women rest carefree in lavish interiors, dressed in fabrics such as satin, silk and organza, sometimes scantily clad. All this in contrast to the rural 'beauties' that painters of this genre depicted elsewhere in Europe. Chaplin also made ceiling and wall paintings, for example for the Tuilleriën in Paris.
