The Hague painter Cornelis Samuel Stortenbeker is best known for his paintings of living and dead birds. He was a pupil of his older brother, the cattle painter Pieter Stortenbeker (1828-1898), and the portrait and genre painter Christoffel Bisschop (1828-1904). Taught at the Academy voor Beeldende Kunst in The Hague and was a member of the society 'Pulchri Studio'.
