Little is known about the life of the romantic painter Dirk de Haan. We know that he was born in Amsterdam and continued to live and work in the city all his life, with the exception of a (study) period in Brussels from 1851 to 1856. Like many painters, De Haan must have been inspired by the picturesque streets of the Jordaan. and the Jewish neighbourhood. In addition, Amsterdam had a good market for cityscapes. In addition to Dutch city and village views, De Haan also painted landscapes and marines.
