Dirk Vis was born and raised in the Zaan region. After studying law in Amsterdam, he worked briefly as a lawyer in the early 1930s. In 1937 he chose the painting profession. A year earlier he had moved to Bergen, where Jan van Herwijnen became an important source of inspiration for him. From 1952 to 1971, Vis was director of the Institute for Applied Arts Education (from 1967 the Gerrit Rietveld Academy) in Amsterdam. He published several books on Zaandam subjects. Vis painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes in an expressionist style.
