biography of Erich Büttner

The Berlin painter Erich Büttner studied painting, graphics and book illustration from 1906 at the school of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin. As a young artist, he then joined the progressive artists' group Berliner Secession in 1908 and took part in their exhibitions. His oeuvre includes genre scenes and cityscapes of Berlin and portraits. Particularly in the 1920s, with portraits of artist friends such as Lovis Corinth, George Grosz and Heinrich Zille, he achieved a formal language bordering on expressionism.
