Ernst Vijlbrief was a painter active in the avant-garde movement of the 1960s. He created gouaches consisting of spontaneously ‘written’ streaks, lines, circles, splatters and smudges, usually applied in thick impasto with fields of colour in uneven brushstrokes. The vitality and forcefulness of his work can be compared to that of the CoBrA painters, with whom he occasionally exhibited in group shows in the 1950s. Vijlbrief was also active as the chairman of the Association of Artists and Sculptors (BKK) and the initiator of a myriad of artistic happenings in Amsterdam.
