Water plays a leading role in the oeuvre of the German impressionist Erwin Günther; he mainly painted sea, coastal and beach views. In addition, there are some interiors known from him. Günther was educated at the academy in Düsseldorf and then made long journeys through Europe and Africa. In the period 1890-1905 he stayed in the Netherlands several times, where he painted in Egmond aan Zee and in Dordrecht and the surrounding area. From 1891 Erwin Günther exhibited annually in the famous Glaspalast in Munich, and from 1893 in Berlin.
