Félix Buelens is one of the painters who established their name in Belgian Flanders from 1890. He was educated at the academy in Brussels and had already met James Ensor in Ostend in 1885, with whom he would remain dear friends for the rest of his life. After the academy, Ostend became his hometown. There Buelens managed a guest house annex museum and founded the group 'Cercle des Beaux-Arts' with Permeke, Ensor and Emile Spilliaert. Although the painter quickly caught the attention of the public, he was primarily an artist who worked for himself. He painted his still lifes in a bold and robust impressionism. Delicate hues with brightly glowing reds, greens and yellows here and there testify to the same color virtuosity as Ensor.
