biography of Félix Labisse

Surrealist painter and set designer born in Douai, France. In 1927 Labisse moved to Ostend, Belgium, where he met James Ensor, whose work greatly impressed him. In 1938 he also met the Belgian surrealists René Magritte and Paul Delvaux. A fictional dream world dominates Labisse's work, in which he forms personal obsessions through mythological, biblical and allegorical depictions. In 1932 the painter moved to Paris , but returned to Le Zoute near Ostend for a few months every year, which is why he is often counted among the Belgian Surrealists.
