biography of Firmin Baes

Belgian painter, pupil of the symbolist Léon Frédéric. After 1908 he applied himself to the use of pastels, which he modeled as a powder color with his thumb and in which he achieved great virtuosity. After 1915, this earned him many portrait commissions for the Belgian aristocracy. Characteristic for his work is the strong composition, contrast between light and shadow and rich colors.
