Frans Hartman painted landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes (gardens, streets) in a naturalistic-impressionistic style. In Apeldoorn he was apprenticed to a house painter, after which he followed an education as a decorative painter in Utrecht. He stayed in Brussels in 1925, before going to the art academy in The Hague. Hartman received the Royal Grant for Free Painting, an incentive prize for young talented artists, and the Pulchri Prize. He made several (study) trips to the south of France. Around 1944 Hartman was a member of the Pulchri Studio artists' society in The Hague.
