biography of Frédéric François 'Frans' Slager

Frans Slager was a descendant of an artist family that was closely associated with 's-Hertogenbosch. His father was the Bossche portrait and genre painter Piet Slager sr, founder of the 's-Hertogenbossche Kunstkring. His brother Piet Jr and sisters Corry and Jeanette were also painters. After his father's first lessons, Frans continued his artistic education at the Royal School in Den Bosch and then at the Antwerp Academy (1903-1905) under Frans van Leemputten, among others. Frans Slager traveled a lot, including to Barbizon and through Italy, and preferred to paint outside with his painter's box on his back and the canvas tied to the bicycle. The harbour and city center of Antwerp, Brabant cityscapes and landscapes and still lifes were his most beloved subjects. The painter also made a name for himself as a writer and book illustrator.
