biography of Johanna Frederika 'Freddie' Langeler

Freddie Langeler is known to many as an illustrator of children's books. Together with her husband, the painter and cartoonist Eelco ten Harmsen van Beek (1897-1953), she formed a duo of designers that made advertising and book drawings on commission. The painter has illustrated more than a hundred books. She also wrote the lyrics for some of them. She has also illustrated advertising booklets with her husband. Their most famous creation is probably Flipje the little fruit man of Tiel, who appeared in short comics that were commissioned by the De Betuwe jam factory in Tiel. Freddie Langeler's free work mainly consists of paintings of stylized female figures, accompanied by one or more animals.
