biography of Friedrich Stahl

Friedrich Stahl was a painter and illustrator, among others for the humorous weekly 'Fliegende Blätter'. In this latter capacity he can be regarded as an important chronicler of the mundane life of his time. Stahl initially lived in Munich, where he also received his education at the academy. After that he traveled a lot, including to England, France and Holland. From 1904 to 1910 Stahl - married to an American - lived in Florence, where he studied the work of Botticelli, among other things. From 1923 to 1940 he lived in Rome. For his paintings, the artist was inspired by mythology and the Bible, but above all, as for his illustrations, by life on the terraces and boulevards of Berlin and other fashionable cities.
