Frits Maris, a cousin of the famous Maris brothers, visited the Hague academy and also received lessons from Willem Maris and Jan Toorop. By the latter painter, at that time a member of the avant-garde group 'Les Vingts', he came into contact with the pointillism of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Maris closely followed the rules of this and thus became one of the first painters to apply neo-impressionism in the Netherlands. His pointillized landscapes, figures and cityscapes are usually clear and light in colour.
