biography of Friedrich 'Fritz' Wahle

The German impressionist Friedrich Wahle was trained at the Munich Academy and completed his studies in Paris. After his return to Germany he became a very popular painter of narrative genre scenes. In line with this were his activities as an illustrator, including for the satirical, socially critical magazine 'Fliegende Blätter'. In connection with the reproduction technique at the time, he supplied designs in shades of gray for this purpose. This led to a completely new style for Wahle in which he limited himself to a few colours. It is known that the painter visited Volendam between 1900 and 1910 and also painted there.
