biography of George Sheringham

London-born George Sheringham trained in painting and drawing at the King's School in Gloucester, the Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Sorbonne in Paris. Sheringham devoted himself to painting exotic landscapes, floral still lifes and figures, with which he was well represented at many exhibitions abroad in New York, Melbourne and Venice, among others. Sheringham was also particularly active in costume and set design and book illustrations. In London he designed the stage set for Martin Harvey's production of Hamlet and illustrated Max Beerbohm's, 'The Happy Hypocrite'. A highlight of this oeuvre was the imaginative set and costume designs for the 'D'Orly Carte Opera Company', for which he received a Royal decoration in London in 1937.
