The Dutchman Georges Joseph van Sluyters, who became famous under the name Georges de Feure, was one of the most original and versatile representatives of the fin de siècle. He started his artistic career in Paris as an actor and poster designer, then made a name for himself as a painter of female figures and landscapes and finally devoted himself to designing carpets, textiles, furniture and stained glass. Between 1890 and 1905, his name was inextricably linked with the avant-garde movements of Symbolism, Decadence, Japonism and Art Nouveau. Around 1895, together with Eugène Gaillard, he was selected by Siegfried Bing to design the decorations for the Pavillon Bing at the Paris World's Fair in 1900. Thus becoming known as a decorative artist, in addition to painting, he devoted himself to creating extremely refined 'vide poche' furniture.
