biography of Georges Marie Julien Girardot

The French painter Georges Marie Julien Girardot was born in Besançon in 1856. In the 1970s he moved to Paris to become an apprentice to the history painter Albert Maignan. There Girardot developed into a skilled painter of genre scenes and still lifes, often in large format and placed in a realistically painted, timeless landscape. Girardot had a preference for narrative village scenes, but was also inspired by Greek mythology and the Bible. From the 1990s he exhibited at the Paris Salon. There he won many prizes, a sign that his paintings were highly regarded by critics and contemporaries.
