biography of Guglielmo Innocenti

At the end of the 19th century the Italian Guglielmo Innocenti is one of the genre painters who place their images in richly decorated Rococo interiors. This '18th century genre', as it is called, was particularly loved by the bourgeoisie throughout Europe. The 18th century was liked to be seen as the pinnacle of taste and elegance. The 'Italiennes' were also a popular subject: Italian peasant girls and women in traditional costume, who were seen as pure and untouched by the advancing industrialization everywhere. Particularly because of their picturesque and colorful clothing, this subject fascinated many painters, especially in France, the Netherlands (including Jacob Maris) and Italy.
