biography of Wilhelmus Hubertus ‘Guillaume’ Serpenti

The Limburg artist and industrial designer Giel Serpenti started working for the Maastricht pottery factory De Sphinx at the age of 14, where he would continue to work for the rest of his life. In addition, he was engaged in free drawing and painting. His oeuvre includes (French) landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes and free subjects painted in a moderate expressionist style. His teachers included Jos Postmes, Edmond Bellefroid and engraver Hub Levigne. Perhaps because of this, he received the honourable commission in 1937 to calligraphy the program for the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard. In 1948, Serpenti was appointed head of the Hand Painters Department at the Sphinx. He set up a painting studio and provided training for decorators and designers, including Charles Eyck.
