biography of Johann Emil Rudolf 'Hans' Herrmann

Hans Herrmann belonged to the group of German landscape painters, mostly students of the marine painter E.G. Dücker (1841-1916) at the Düsseldorfer Akademie, who traveled to the Dutch coast after 1885 at regular intervals to paint fishermen's life in Katwijk and Scheveningen. Herrmann first came to Katwijk in 1890, following in the footsteps of German Grobe (1857-1938), who made his first visit to this picturesque fishing village in 1887. Characteristic of the coastal landscapes of these painters are the balanced color and light values and a loose, impressionistic touch. In addition to his Dutch beach views, Herrmann was also known for his richly decorated cityscapes of Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Vlissingen and Rotterdam.
