Hein Mader was born in Austria as the son of a furniture maker. In 1960, love brought him to Amsterdam and since 1989 the artist lived in Mantgum, Friesland, where he created a sculpture garden with his work. Initially Mader worked as a model maker and ship's carpenter, but around 1970 he completely opted for sculpture. His sculptures – in stone, steel and wood – are often large and abstract. They have a powerful appearance and an organic shape as a basis, with graceful lines. Beauty and harmony in form are a statement for him: 'I want to serve beauty. With my images I want to act against that current in the world that denies the beauty of creation. That recklessly exploits and abuses creation.” Mader has released few statues.
