During his studies at the academy in Düsseldorf, Heinrich Heimes traveled to the Dutch North Sea coast to sketch and paint. He was mainly to be found in Egmond aan Zee, where he soon became friends with Gari Melchers and George Hitchcock. He converted the somewhat steamy atmosphere above the water and the comings and goings of the fishermen with their heavy ships on the beach into beautiful impressionistic canvases. Heimes also made study trips to Italy, Greece and Egypt.
