Helmert Richard van der Flier was one of the Dutch Romantic painters who specialized in landscapes and animal paintings. He was trained by the Hilversum cattle painter James de Rijk, from the school of Jan van Ravenswaay, who counted among his many students also F.H. Sijpkens and Lion Schulman. Van der Flier lived and worked in Baarn all his life. The area, with many heath and sandy soils, was a constant source of inspiration, especially for his performances with sheep.
