Hendrik Frauenfelder taught himself to paint. Although he was born in Vught, he was active most of his life in South Holland, in the area of Warmond and Alkemade (Kaag). Here, in imitation of the painters of the Hague School, he mainly captured the polder and forest landscape with everyday scenes in smooth brushstrokes: a woman at a clothesline, skating pleasure on the ice or cattle grazing in the meadow. He died at the age of 37.
