Hendrika van der Pek was born in Amsterdam and received her education at the Rijksacademie. In 1896 the painter married her teacher Egbert Schaap, with whom she moved to the picturesque village of Kortenhoef in the same year. There the couple lived and worked in a certain prosperity in Villa Nova. They set out on foot, by bicycle or by rowing boat to paint in the great outdoors. The colourful, smoothly painted landscapes and orchards of the painter almost always exude a carefree mood. She also liked to travel. Some of her landscapes are reminiscent of travels through France, Germany and Italy.
