Henk Gorter was born in Friesland, but left for Amsterdam at the age of 43 to train as a drawing teacher and to study at the academy. His oeuvre consists of various subjects, from landscapes and portraits to still lifes. He also varied in style, so he painted one work of art in a loose, impressionistic touch, sometimes almost surrealistic and another more abstract. Gorter uses a lot of colour in all his works. He was a member of the 'Vereniging Sint Lucas' and the 'Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars' and settled in Gelderland where he died in Renkum at the age of 66.
