biography of Hermanus Johannes 'Herman' van Wissen

The talented Groningen Herman van Wissen worked as an architect, graphic artist and painter. Various town houses, country houses and a number of churches were designed by him. As a painter he preferred to make quick impressions in chalk, watercolour and oil paint, preferably outside in direct contact with the environment. In the 1930s Van Wissen received painting lessons from Jan Derksen Staats, after which he followed the M.O. Draw. A trip to Rome to promote his painting resulted in his first exhibition on his return. Other study trips he made in Europe and the United States also influenced his work. In 1946 Van Wissen became a member of the Groningen art circle De Ploeg. He was a member of the board for 10 years.
