The flower still life of J. Keldermans betrays a skilful hand in the painting of flowers and fruit. It can be assumed that the painter specialized in flower still lifes in the first half of the 19th century. This genre, often embellished with fruit, birds or small insects, was particularly popular in the 19th century. It was customary to arrange such a flower still life on a marble plinth.
