biography of Jacob 'Jaap' Mooy

Jaap Mooy, born in Bergen, did not follow classical art training and studied at the Machinistenschool in Alkmaar. In the late 1930s he came into contact with the visual arts. Mooy is in contact with Charley Toorop, who advises him to remain self-taught. In collages, drawings and sculptures he responds to the Second World War and social abuses. Between 1949 and 1955 he was a member of Vrij Beelden and, although he did not become a member of the Cobra group, in 1964 he took part in the Venice Biennale with Karel Appel and Lucebert. His oeuvre is alternately figurative, abstract, expressive and surrealistic, with Mooy using different materials. His sculptures in particular are an assemblage of all kinds of materials, in which iron and scrap were frequently used. His work is included in, among others, the Kröller-Müller Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centraal Museum.
