biography of Jacobus Pelgrom

The versatile painter and lithographer Jacobus Pelgrom, born in Amsterdam in 1811, made a name for himself with romantic landscapes, icescapes and a few cityscapes and church interiors. He was trained at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in the capital by J.A. Daiwaille and J.W. Pieneman. After 1842 he lived and worked successively in Oosterbeek, Zaandam, Zutphen, Arnhem and Middelburg. In the latter city he was an art teacher at the Stadsacademie. Pelgrom made many study trips, including to the Rhine and Ruhr basins and to Heidelberg and the Scottish Highlands.
