Colorful circus and fairground performances and dancing couples predominate in the oeuvre of the Maastricht painter Jan Bakhoven. He also painted fashionably dressed women for a shop window or in a shopping street in his own figurative style. His treatment of (artificial) light occasionally reminds us of the impressionism of his Maastricht comrade Rob Graafland. In 1910, both were among the founders of the Limburgse Kunstkring, a group of artists who met regularly in café De Suisse on the Vrijthof.
