Due to the frequent use of the palette knife, the paintings by Jan, or John, Bévort are recognizable by their unique style. Bévort settled after his education in Utrecht, where he had his own gallery in the Choorstraat and his studio in a cellar. Around 1960 he moved permanently to the North Holland Schoorl. His oeuvre consists mainly of impressionist cityscapes, landscapes, marines and beach scenes. Some flower still lifes of the painter are also known.
