Jan Braet von Uberfeldt was an influential painter of portraits and genre and history pieces. Pupil of the then well-known genre and portrait painter Jan Adam Kruseman. He lived in Amsterdam for most of his life. In 1877 he settled in Langerak near Doetinchem. He taught painters such as Jacob Willem Gruijter and J.F.P. Portielje, but was also an early teacher of Piet Mondrian.
