The artist Jan Carbaat is counted among the Bremmerians, painters who were influenced at the beginning of the 19th century by the ideas of the painter and art educator H.P. Bremmer. This group of painters also included Jan Adam Zandleven, Jakob Nieweg, Dirk Nijland and Jo Koster. Under Bremmer's urging, they used a pointillism inspired by Vincent van Gogh's work. Bremmer was an advisor to Hélene Kröller-Müller and the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo contains several works by these Bremmerians, including Carbaat.
