The Amsterdam artist Jan Jonges taught himself to paint. Not much is known about his life; his oeuvre does show a lively interest in numerous subjects. He painted landscapes, figures, animals, still lifes and, above all, scenes related to the water: ship scenes, harbours and beach views. His style varied from figurative to semi-abstract. Jonges also made (study) trips abroad, including to Spain.
