biography of Jean-Baptiste Coene

The Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste Coene came from an artistic family. He was the son of the genre and history painter Constantin Coene and younger brother of Jean Coene. Like his brother, he received painting lessons from his father, who was a teacher at the Antwerp Academy, and he became skilled in painting finely detailed, idyllic landscapes. His work was characterized by a great attention to detail. He became widely known as a romantic landscape painter and exhibited several times at the Brussels salon in the 1840s. He also built up a reputation as a painter of animals.
