Johannes Lodeizen began his career as a teacher and only later took up painting, inspired by the painter and art instructor H.P. Bremmer. His oeuvre spans mostly landscapes and intimate still lifes of books, usually meticulously composed with a sensitive eye for detail. He worked in different styles, according to his mood, ranging from late impressionistic to realistic. Through his acquaintance with Bremmer, Lodeizen’s work came to the attention of collectors such as Hélène Kröller-Müller.
