biography of Josephus Alphonus 'Jo' Schrijnder

Versatile visual artist and mayor: this is how Jo Schrijnder's career can be briefly summarized. From 1924 to 1946 he was mayor of the West Frisian Grootebroek. As an artist he designed the town hall there; there are symbolic wall decorations, ornaments, stained glass windows and furniture made by him. Schrijnder was a painter, sculptor, glazier and monumental artist. He also provided illustrations for books and magazines, and designed book bindings. As a painter, Jo Schrijnder had a preference for hunting scenes; he also painted portraits, still lifes and landscapes in impressionist style.
