Johan Kiesewetter was born in Amsterdam, where he also died after various periods of living and working in Sloten and Laren. He studied at the School for Applied Arts in Amsterdam and received instruction from the Impressionist Georg Rueter. Kiesewetter painted, drew, and watercolored houses, streets, and landscapes in Amsterdam and the surrounding area in a colourful, loose style, akin to that of the second generation of Impressionists in the early 19th century. During the periods when he worked in the Gooi region, his working method was similar to that of the Laren School painters. He also became known for his flower still lifes in a bright colour palette.
