biography of Johannes Petrus 'Joop' Molenaar

Joop Molenaar, born in 1914 in Rotterdam, came from a skipper family. He himself also worked on mail ships of the Rotterdam Lloyd and at Van Ommeren before he chose the painting profession in 1930. Almost all his paintings have maritime shipping and the port of Rotterdam as their subject: proud ships against turbulent skies with Rotterdam in the offing. Many of his paintings were commissioned by Rotterdam shipowners, but he also painted other waters and water works, such as the Zuiderzee Works, the Lauwerszee and the port of Antwerp.
